Design Guidelines
Best practices to ensure your parts are manufacturable and cost-effective.
CNC Machining
- 1
Avoid Deep Pockets
Deep pockets require long tools which can chatter. Keep depth-to-diameter ratio under 4:1.
- 2
Add Fillets to Internal Corners
CNC tools are round. Internal corners must have a radius. Recommended minimum radius: 1mm.
- 3
Limit Thin Walls
Thin walls can vibrate or break. Minimum recommended thickness: 0.8mm for metals, 1.5mm for plastics.
3D Printing (FDM/SLA)
- 1
Watch for Overhangs
Angles greater than 45° usually require support structures, affecting surface finish.
- 2
Minimum Wall Thickness
Ensure walls are at least 1.0mm thick to prevent warping or failure during printing.
- 3
Hollow Out Parts
Reduce material usage and print time by hollowing out thick sections (with escape holes for resin/powder).
